on one occasion when i was in venice, we got caught in the regatta. we took a boat taxi over to the island of murano and low and behold, the gondola regatta was underway. what a spectacle! gondolas with as few as 6 and as many as 24 gondoliers from all over the world come. there was one boat from california! they all dress up in their midevil finery. (race was started in the 1300's) highly suggest if you go, to try to catch this regatta. here's a linc...

the views of the race from murano were wonderful. sat at a waterside restaurant for most of the day watching the pageantry.

Wow! What a wonderful experience for you! Thanks for sharing that. I had no idea there was such an array of gondolas as displayed in the link. Just had the one image in my mind of the solitary, singing gondolier. You know the one, in the striped shirt... Thanks for posting that. I do hope to get there one day and will seek out these unique experiences (or perhaps they'll find me, as yours did you. :))
