{Update Friday, Nov. 6} We got blessed with an Indian summer day!! If you want to come out and lend a hand for a couple hours and be a part of this great event, come on out and join us. Celebration afterwards around a bonfire and a sleepover at Tom's farm.

We LOVE the Piney but the take-out at Walter Nunnelly bridge requires ropes or a lot of manpower to get our boats up an incline to the paved parking lot. We take a lot of pleasure with Tennessee's rivers. Here's your chance to give something back. When we are done, there will be steps made of railroad ties on that incline with a built-in slide down the center, like one of the access points on the Harpeth. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) is partnering with us for this Adopt-an-Access and offered to provide rocks as fill for the steps. We'll make the Piney take-out better not only for us but for all canoeists, kayakers and the public to enjoy.

Three events are posted for this event. One for those who are willing to lend a hand, and the other two events for those who cannot be there but willing to adopt-a-worker. We need approximately $400 to pay for railroad ties and lunch for the workers. A $10 contribution adopts one of the workers.

Plan to attend a planning workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 27, place to be determined by number of attendees.

An address will be provided at which to meet to caravan to the Walter Nunnelly bridge.

the property I have to work at this weekend is in West Nashville, at the other end of the world from here. Otherwise I would be there with bells on (or at least a wheelbarrow and toolbelt).

I marked this on my iPhone Google Maps; 35.870308,-87.500526 (Piney River 1912 County Hwy-339, TN 37137) for the take out / project site.

Also, the turn from 48->230 has a RR crossing, keep an eye for that.

Tom bought enough drill bits so we're good. We'll need extra wheelbarrows. We'll go to dinner afterwards at Kelly's Diner, a favorite of the locals. Good food, great big portions.

The take out is on a stretch of TN-230 that bends to the right so it is easy to miss. It is BEFORE you cross the bridge if you are heading west, on the right side of the road.

Here is a link with directions from I-24 in Nashville: http://maps.google.com/maps... These should be correct. There will be a brick church where you must turn from TN-48 to TN-230. That is the only tricky turn.

Leslie, Will the meetup location be obvious if I just travel on HWY 230 W toward the bridge? Haven't been to the Piney before... Thanks, Linda

Oops, guess my note wasn't clear about which night. Tom's invited whomever wants to stay over at his place on Saturday night. That will make it easy especially for the Piney paddlers on Sunday. We'll have a variety of quiches for breakfast and fresh fruit.

Workers only - Tom invites you to spend the night at his farm, which is fifteen minutes from the take-out! Bring an air mattress and bedding to grab some floor space indoors. Other options to spend the night at Tom's is an RV that sleeps three, or even bring a tent if you prefer to sleep outside. There is a great place to pitch a tents on a deck overlooking the field. We'll have a toasty bonfire Saturday evening, too, to celebrate our hard work. Piney paddlers, bring your boats!

    •  The steps really turned out great, and I felt thankful to all who participated (in a MULTITUDE of ways) as we carried my boat up after the paddle on Sunday! Thanks so very much to all who contributed time, money, food, encouragement, tools, supplies, knowledge, leadership, and hard work! Well done, everybody! :)

PA+'s needs a higher rating than 'Great' - like ten stars for AWESOME! Team work and commitment was unbeatable. We had five steps to complete when it got dark. We worked by car lights, flashlights, headlamps. Six more hours on Sunday to fill with rocks - the days of struggling up that hill with our boats is gone thanks to Dan, Butterfly, Bama, Michael, JP, Linda, Cathy, Don, McGyver, Jerry, Gabe, Jordan, Mary B, Leslie and Tom. Check out the before and after pictures. How many sledgehammers did we go through?

       We did it!!
    •  Terrific learning experience and wow, what a great take-out.
    •  A lot of people did a lot of hard work. I am only worried that Leslie got stuck with a lot of the cost, If you haven't donated, please do so now. I left around 6pm, and they were going to put the rock gravel in sunday morning. sorry I didn't make it back sunday. Again if you haven't donated, please do so now. J P Morgan

It is Sunday morning and I am not nearly as sore as I thought I would be. The next one we do will be a lot easier than this one, our first. I suggest tearing down that piece of art down by LP Field and putting in a similar take-out for the Cumberland River. If we do it at night (again) nobody will know until we are done.

Paddle Adventures Plus Members Gifted toward the Piney River @ The Walter Nunnelly Bridge Access Project in Many ways & on multiple days. We appreciate all the support for this project to allow Paddle Adventures Plus to ultimately gift a better River Access Point to our fellow Paddlers. We invested a lot of sweat equity this project. If you have tossed around railroad ties lately, shoveled 4" limestone rocks, or driven 36" lengths of 1/2" rebar with a sledge hammer, then take a second to think about it. Those are just a few of the tasks conquered over & over during this project. Enjoy the photos (Thanks Mary). The Teamwork was Amazing. The Testimony of Reward from Hard Work, Accomplishment, & being a member of Our Team makes me Smile! Enjoy an easier trek up & down the steep bank the next time you visit Walter Nunnelly Bridge River Access, Take Great Pride in our PAP+ Meetup Team & Thank TWRA for supplying the gravel.
    •  Team work with a great group of men and women from all walks of life, that all flowed together, to build this set of steps that we will all be proud of. ( and speaking for myself, sleep great that night zzzzz ) :-)
