Backpack & Kayak "Camp Gear & Packing 101"
Hosted by 3 Times Ed
Informational Meeting: Packing a Backpack and Kayak for Overnight Journeys.
“Eat, Drink, Socialize and LEARN”
For The Experienced AND Newbies
Well everyone, if you’re part of this group we know you like ADVENTURE! And you probably even have ‘stuff’ too and like most people would like to learn more about how to use the ‘stuff’ you have, how to learn about what additional stuff you may need and just plain how to talk about ‘stuff’ with people who also enjoy the ‘stuff’ associated with the outdoors, particularly CAMPING, KAYAKING, BACKPACKING or the combination of all of these.
We all know that the books can tell us one thing BUT it’s EXPERIENCE that counts and we are VERY lucky to have some folks with this priceless experience who will talk to the rest of us about the ‘do’s and don’ts’ that they’ve learned along the way.
So come to Ed’s house on Friday January 29th from 6:00 to 11:00 PM and we will be talking about our “stuff”, how to use it, what’s new in “stuff” and general story telling of the trials and tribulations of the great outdoors. We will talk about where to BUY your ‘stuff’ and where to RENT it such as REI so you can try it and see if you’re even interested in doing these activities.
Some topics we’d like to address:
What’s new in GEAR and selecting the proper GEAR for both Kayak Camping and Backpacking
1. Packing a Backpack for long and short trips
2. Food selections and rationing
4. How to choose and Pack a Sleeping Bag
5. Weight and Space considerations
6. Packing for Wet / Cold Weather
7. How to properly load your kayak for camping
8. How to start a fire
9. Basic navigation – maps GPS, Compass
10. Proper clothing
TO BRING:
1. A snack to share- maybe even your favorite trail / camping food?
2. Drink of choice
3. “Stuff” if you have questions about how to use what you have or need fitment, etc.
4. Your wisdom and stories to share
5. A DESIRE to LEARN and share information with others

Thanks everyone for coming and for helping make this a fun, informative evening. David, John and Russell, you're great teachers and you shared your knowledge in a very understanding manner. The food was good and thanks everybody for helping set up too!
Great fun, and very informative. Just perfect.:D
Yes, Wade they FINALLY replaced the road sign,, lol,, so Dan won't have to stand out there waving people up the street!
Don`t forget to put some lights or something at the end of your street Ed or have they put up a street sign?

Good call with canceling. It just took Ed and I 2 hours to get back to his house from the West End... Roads nearly impossible to drive on.
I'm just a maybe. Not sure what my transportation will be on the 5th. I totaled the VW on our wonderful icy roads today.
Thanks Ed and Michael, for the feedback of a possibilty of a reschedule... I make a motion that we build a huge snow man on Heavenly Hill.........
Folks, All indications are inclimate weather for Friday. Darn it. We are not ready to call off the event, but paying close attention to the weather.
We will decide no later than Friday morning. If we decide not to have the event due to inclimate weather, then we will re-schedule..... Thank You Michael :)
Theresa, Thank u so much. We'll let ya know!
Any Minimalists interested in lightening their backpacking load? Check online for Henry Shires tents, Six Moon Designs tents/backpacks and Montbell's stretch sleeping bags. I've reduced my personal pack, bag & shelter, combined, down to a total of less than 8 pounds. For cheap gear of any kind (including paddling), check www.geartrade.com.
I am at Ed's now and will be tonight helping to set things up. Can anyone bring 1. Folding Tables 2. Firewood 3. Folding chairs 4. Experienced Demolition Crew? Tks. KS
Hi Rich, yes, if we end up canceling or there is small turn-out, we definately plan to repeat this Meetup. It's had too popular of a response not to. Thanks for asking and keep posted for updates. Ed
