All beginner paddlers are encouraged to visit Foggy Bottom for an overview of paddling safety, gear, and technique before the race.
Race points are calculated 50% speed, 50% costume, with bonus points along the way... so even the last one to cross the finish line COULD win!

ABOUT THE RACE
Compete in a kayak or canoe Race down a 5 mile section of the Harpeth River.
Participants may provide their own boat or rent a boat from Foggy Bottom Canoe.
Solo and tandem boats welcome (remember, points are not all about speed).
All race participants must be off the water by 4pm.

Costumes Judging
Costume includes decoration of oneself and one’s boat.
All boat decorations must be made from natural organic materials (leaves, twigs, twine, etc) so that if the boat overturns, the Harpeth River will not be polluted.
Any non-organic decorations will disqualify the participant from points in the costume portion of the contest.
Race particpiants will have from 1pm-2pm to decorate their boats.

Difficulty: This event is open to beginner and advanced paddlers alike.
It is very strongly encouraged that participants have been river paddling before.
Anyone who has not been river paddling before but would like to compete in the competition are strongly encouraged to visit Foggy Bottom’s Canoe for a brief overview of paddling safety. This challenge is designed in a way that participants could win even if they float in last place.

DISQUALIFICATIONS
Decorations: Use of non-organic decorations on the boat will disqualify the participant from receiving any costume points. Prohibited materials include metals, non-biodegradable plastics, cords, tape, and the like.
Safety: Safety is most important during this event. Participants will be disqualified if any attempt is made to tip, intentionally cut off, or in any other way harm the well being of fellow participants during the race. Judges and representatives will be scattered along the race course (sometimes in plain sight, sometimes in hiding) to report any foul play.

Environmental Consciousness: If the participant’s boat tips over, the participant must stop to retreive any items that fall into the water. Any participant who does not make an attempt to retrieve their items from the water will be disqualified.

March18th Additional Updates;
Additional Information:

Big River Racers,
Thank you for registering for Lightning 100's Team Green Big River Race with Tennessee Repertory Theatre! Check begins at 1pm on Sunday, March 21st. If you plan to rent a boat from Foggy Bottom Canoe, please call them at [masked] to reserve your boat in advance. If you plan to bring your own boat, meet at Kingston Springs City Park (614 Country Hwy 1931, Kingston Springs, TN) at or before 1pm for check in and boat decorations. The race will begin at 2pm once all boats are in the water. This is a rain or shine event, so please dress appropriate for the weather and water temperatures (quick drying clothing, and bring a change of clothes for when you get out of the water).

Scoring for this event will be accumulated in three categories: speed, costume, and trivia points.

Speed down the river
1st Place: 10 points
2nd Place: 8 points
3rd Place: 6 points
4th Place: 4 points
5th place: 2 points
Costume judging: Judging will take place before the start of the race by an actor of the TN Repertory Theatre's production of Big River.
1st Place: 10 points
2nd Place: 8 points
3rd Place: 6 points
4th Place: 4 points
5th Place: 2 points
Trivia questions (up to 20 points)
Each question answered correctly is worth a set amount of points. Bring a pen. You will receive an envelope with trivia questions at the start of the race and may open the questions once in the water. It is your choice to start paddling or start answering the questions at the start of the race.

The race will conclude at the Hwy 70 bridge (at the intersection of Hwy 70 and County Hwy 1933). A boat is considered to have "crossed the finish line" once it crosses underneath the Hwy 70 bridge. Boats will then line up along the water for a safe take out. The take out location can be steep and difficult, so it is very important that we not rush the take out. Once at the parking lot there may be an opportunity for a final trivia question.

If you are renting a boat through Foggy Bottom Canoe, your boat will be shuttled by Foggy Bottom Canoe and you will receive a shuttle back to Kingston Springs City Park to retrieve your vehicle. If you have your own boat, you will receive a shuttle back to your own vehicle, which you can then drive back to the take out location to load up your boat.

Participants without their own boats may rent a canoe or kayak at a discount ($25) from Foggy Bottom Canoe.

    •  i retract my comment "bring it, losers." you guys are competitive! loads of fun & would do again anytime.

There was a gorilla paddling a kayak full of fruit, a couple of guys paddling a canoe in togas, and some of the best Huck Finn costumes ever. The fact that it was 50 degrees w/ torrential rains only added to the adventure. Needless to say, it was a great day on the river!

Wow, we had a great time. Enjoyed hanging out with everyone & checking out the cool costumes. Another storm chaser event. Thanks to all the PAP participants!
